Diagnosing and Getting Rid of Moles in the Yard Properly

By Jack Lucas

Most homeowners will try just about any remedy that they could get their hands on for the main purpose of getting rid of moles in the yard. Their consistent digging and tunneling is also a very big headache for landscapers whose time and efforts are wasted in beautifying a lawn only to wake up the following day seeing ridges and mounds all over. These critters can also damage root systems as they go about their tunneling activities which, all the more, give homeowners headaches.

The two most common signs that your lawn has been infested with moles are the presence of ridges and cone-shaped mole hills that are formed as the mole excavates. Knowing this is especially important so that you are assured that it is actually moles that you are coexisting with. With this, you will be able to come up with the right approaches to get rid of them.

The use of barriers is a rather humane way in getting rid of moles in the yard. You can do this by creating trenches or by building wire screens around those areas that need protection from the damaging tunneling of the moles. You have to build your barriers in a way that it is buried at least 30 inches below the ground and extends 5 to 6 inches above it. This method will require so much effort that it would be impractical unless you are looking to only build it around a small area.

Some of the newer ways for mole eradication are the use of ultrasonic and vibration devices. These tools take advantage of the moles sensitivity to minor sounds and sensations by letting out intermittent pulses that are geared to annoy the moles. This will force them out of your lawn and do their digging activities some place else.

The most favorite treat of moles is grubs that are bound to be thriving in your lawn soil. If you rid your lawns of these insects, the moles will have to leave your yard in search of other soils that have an abundance of grubs. Doing so can also be beneficial for your plants as grubs can also feed on them. Preferably, you should opt to use those pesticides that give the least harm to the environment. If you see an alternative to toxic chemicals as you shop for pesticides in your supply store, opt to buy and use.

Cat litter has also been considered as an effective tool in getting rid of moles in the yard. In this method, cat feces are merely sprinkled around your yard and its smell should be enough to drive the moles away. There are, however, debates that question the effectiveness of such a method in actually getting rid of these nasty diggers. One of the issues that it can be hard to determine where to place the cat litter as it is impossible to predict where the moles will be digging next.

Moles may give you a headache with the kind of damage that they can inflict on your lawns but you should not fail to realize that they play a role in the natural food chain. Therefore, as much as possible, use techniques that will merely repel them or at least just capture them alive. These rather non-barbaric methods can also be effective in getting rid of moles in the yard.
